Haskell Ag. Lab 50th
The Haskell Ag. Lab celebrated its 50th year anniversary on Tuesday,
August 14, 2007 with a public field day. The field day drew an audience
of more than 500 people to the University of Nebraska research farm
located 1.5 miles east of the Dixon County Fairgrounds which are located
in Concord, NE. Among the crowd were area crop and livestock producers,
current and former university faculty, staff, and administrators, members
of the Northeast Nebraska Experimental Farm Association and heirs of
the C.D. Haskell family who had donated land to establish the experimental
research farm in 1957.
Activities for the day included research tours, informational booths,
and a free lunch. The luncheon program featured University of Nebraska
President J.B. Milliken, NU Regent Chuck Hassebrook, Institute of Agriculture
and Natural Resources Vice Chancellor John Owens and Nebraska State
Senator Mike Flood. The speakers recognized the role of the ag lab in
helping the University address the needs of rural farms and communities
in the past and into the future.
The Northeast Nebraska Experimental Farm Association inducted five Haskell
Ag Lab faculty into their Hall of Fame. Recognized for their contributions
to northeast Nebraska agricultural research and extension programming
were Don Kubik, Extension dairyman 1959-1991; Mike Brumm, swine specialist
1979-2006; Dick Gavit, Extension forester 1958-1984; Darlene (Martin)
Pohlman, human nutrition specialist 1990-2005; and John Witkowski, entomologist
and former district director 1975-2007.
